Lidia Castro, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, fondly known as GG, died Friday, April 29, 2022, at her home in Corona, NY. She was 87 years old.
A lifelong reader who was wise beyond her education, she was born in Higuey, Dominican Republic, on August 6, 1934, to a family of 12 children. She worked all her life in domestic and commercial housekeeping, both in her native country and in the United States, where she emigrated with her family in 1966. She was a proud member of Union Local 32 B-J, and she has been a proud American citizen since 1987.
Her three children, Pascual, Leonardo and Francisca, who survive her, remember her dedication to family and her strong work ethic. Lidia taught her family by example to be a warrior and a hard worker. During her retirement years, she enjoyed traveling with her family, tending to her plants, and being GG, the greatest. She quietly and valiantly battled ovarian and lung cancer for almost a decade.
Lidia, is embraced as the Matriarch of the family, and as Mami or Madrina by so many more. She died surrounded by her loving family and her constant companion, Ninja Bear, a cat she rescued and hand-fed.
A memorial service will be hosted on Saturday, May 7th at 9:30 a.m., at St. Paul the Apostle R C. Church, at 98-16 55th Avenue, Corona, NY 11368.
In place of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Lidia's honor to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
