Vernon and I became fast friends from the Queens College (QC) Freshman basketball team. We not only shared basketball adventures but also each other's lives. I had bought a house and after a few years decided to paint the exterior. The cost of a professional was too high. So, I called Vernon and asked if he could help me. I would pay him. It wasn't very complicated; a primer and a second mixed coat of paint. He agreed. I had completed the prep work the day before. The strategy - in order to escape the heat of the day, we had to start on the west side of the house (the sun rises in the east), paint quickly and accurately; move in the opposite direction of the sun to avoid the heat. Well, we did it. It took over seven hours. The final touch up was minimal. When I went to pay Vernon, he gave me back some of the money and said, "Fred, take this back. That's too much" I asked him why? He said, "We're brothers!"......Now, I ask who does that!!
Every year on my birthday, he and I would just hang out, just the two of us, and share our lives, all the ups and downs, until he could no longer physically do it. We had lot of fun.
I miss (you) my brother, Vernon.
Blessings V and family
