Obituary for Dorothy A. Green

Dorothy A. Green
Dorothy “Dottie” Anne (Swift) Green, 93, beloved wife of the late Vincent A. Green, of Woodside, NY passed away with her family by her side on Saturday, February 3, 2018.
Born October 17, 1924 in Brooklyn to Patrick Swift and Anne (Moran) Swift, Dorothy moved to Astoria at an early age, then into The Boulevard Gardens in Woodside where she lived most of her life. She attended Immaculate Conception School in Astoria and told many stories about the mile-long walk to school and back twice a day (going home for lunch), stating she had a hard time keeping up with her brother and sister. She later attended The High School of the Blessed Sacrament in New York City where she loved studying French and Latin. She valued her Catholic school education and often remarked how much she enjoyed school.
Dorothy met Vinnie while he was in the U. S. Air Force. Uncle Bill introduced them, and it was love at first sight. On their first date, meeting at a Military dance, they discovered that they were born on the same street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. She was proud of her husband and his service to our country.
Before getting married, Dorothy worked in banking where she started as a “signature man”, the first female to verify signatures at the bank. After raising her children, she returned to work at Abitibi Price Paper Company as a receptionist. She loved NYC and the challenge of returning to the workforce.
Dorothy was happiest when spending time with her family and vacationing at Winding Brook Acres in Esopus, NY. She loved history, lived through many wars and presidents, and enjoyed sharing stories from her past. She loved playing games; was good at it, and she played to win! She was an excellent Jeopardy player and typically had more correct answers than anyone watching along with her. She challenged herself with daily crossword puzzles, loved movies and reading The Post. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, babysitting, taking them to modeling auditions and other appointments, and attending their events such as plays, first communions and graduations. Dorothy was very generous and loved treating everyone to dinner.
Dorothy was a very kind and giving woman who cared for her many elderly aunts from Ireland who lived to be close to 100 years old! She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary at Boulevard Gardens where she sent care packages to troops and sold poppies to support disabled and hospitalized veterans in her community. In addition, she volunteered with her daughter for Table to Table.
Dorothy leaves her children Gary Green, his wife Kay (Novicki) Green of Acton, MA, Deirdre (Green) Murphy, her husband Daniel Murphy of Jersey City, NJ, and Robert Green, his wife Sheila (Dupuis) Green of South Glastonbury, CT. In addition, she leaves her beloved grandchildren whom she adored. Kaitlin Green of Brooklyn, Ryan Murphy, his wife, Jamie France, of Washington, D.C., Madeline (Green) Thoms, her husband, Matthew Thoms, of Boston, Kelly Murphy and Marshall Perryman of Ithaca, Alison Green and Bart Flaherty of Brooklyn, and Mackenzie Murphy of Denver.
Dorothy was predeceased by her brother Thomas Swift and his wife Shirley (Cerigoli) Swift and her sister Mary “Mamie” Swift. Dottie and Mamie were especially close, shopping and traveling together to Florida, Vermont, Massachusetts and New Jersey in their senior years.
The family would like to thank Dorothy’s compassionate care givers Maldi Rambarose (who also took care of Mamie) and Sunita Hoashin who kept her company and took care of her, allowing her to stay in her home until recently.
Friends may call Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Leo F. Kearns Funeral Home, 6130 Woodhaven Blvd, Rego Park, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 AM in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 43-19 30th Ave, Astoria, NY. Interment will follow in Mount St. Mary Cemetery, 172-00 Booth Memorial Ave, Flushing, NY.
In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to the American Legion Auxiliary National Headquarters, Attention: Development Division, 8945 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN 46260 or www.alaforveterans.org
